Will the iPad 3 only help Apple control the tablet market according to analysts? (1 reply)

According to market analysts, IHS-iSuppli, the iPad 3 will only continue to grow in the tablet market share. Unlike the Apple iPhone, which is slowly losing ground to Android, the iPad is expected to continue to grow over the next year.

Steve Jobs, who just retired from Apple, introduced the iPad in January 2010. Since that time the iPad has boomed in sales, and even created a market for tablet computers. Global media tablet shipments now are expected to rise to 60 million units in 2011, up 245.9 percent from 17.4 million in 2010, iSuppli said. This is an increase of a little more than a million from the previous iSuppli estimate. About half of this increase is based on the iPad and ipad 3 accessories, whose shipments should reach 44.2 million in 2011, up 500,000 units from the previous reports. In 2011 the iPad is expected to account for 74% of all tablet computer sales across the globe.

iSuppli points to Apple’s recent litigation with Samsung as another reason for holding onto the market. So far Apple has made it very hard for makers like Samsung to break through into the market. A recent decision in Germany even stopped the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the EU. This of course does nothing but help the sales of the iPad as it limits any real competition.

iSuppli says other reasons for the success are “strong marketing and retail expansion not only in China but also other developing economies…[and] Apple is still the only tablet player truly benefiting from peripheral advertising, with content providers promoting their iPad-enabled content. The Wholesale iPad 3 Cases also has profited from being the early favorite in the education space, a factor that will help to boost sales during the third-quarter back-to-school season,”

The iPad 3 is expected to be released early 2012 and will only help Apple keep a grasp on the market. Although the recent HP dump off of tablets may put a blip in iPad sales it of course won’t continue. If anything, it could help Apple long term. Many individuals before either were unaware of the uses of a tablet or that they even existed. With the flooding of the market with the Touchpads the idea of tablet computing may see a surge. This of course will only help Apple as they lead tablet sales. The release of the iPad 3 will offer a new premium device, while rumor is that the iPad 2 may still be produced. This would then be marketed to the lower end entry level market. This is where Apple could really cash in on the new surge of tablet users foripad 3 accessories.

One Tree Hill is very good (no replies)

Someone said he thinks James Lafferty is the most underrated actor in the series, and I just wanted to say agree One Tree Hill DVD with you wholeheartedly. At the beginning of the show, which was the biggest jerk in the world, and I love traveling and development has led him to be an ass for him to be a loyal Walt Disneys 164 DVD friend and wonderful truth. I find it very sad that is so undervalued, and everything is always centered in Chad. But James can play both the donkey and the sweet boyfriend incredibly well, and I for one really want to see what the 24 Hours DVD future of this young actor. One of my favorite things about the series is the relationship between Nathan and Haley, they are perfect together, fits so well, and James and Bethany House MD DVD crackling chemistry on screen seriously. Its history and development of form in the beginning of the writing is really great and I can not wait to see what the authors have in store for them. Gavin DeGraw Exclusive performance is he sings "Oh Chariot" Karen's Café.The Office DVD Nothing special. It is also a clip of a prank played by Paul Barbara, which is fun and shows that he does not like the character he plays.
ShelfServer fails on MacBook Pro after Java update (1 reply)

On 32-bit Mac's such as the original MacBook Pro's (CoreDuo, not Core-2 Duo CPU's) ShelfServer may fail to launch from a saved desktop icon. When this problem occurs, ShelfServer will appear briefly in the Dock (one bounce or less), then disappear. Console.app shows output like the following:

[LaunchRunner Error] The main class "com.sun.javaws.Main" could not be found.
[JavaAppLauncher Error] CallStaticVoidMethod() threw an exception

at apple.launcher.JavaApplicationLauncher.launch(JavaApplicationLauncher.java:52)
Exited with exit code: 1

Launching ShelfServer by following the "Run ShelfServer" link from the website still works. Only the desktop icon is broken.

This problem appears to be related to a recent Java update from Apple. The problem does not appear on 64-bit capable machines (Core-2 or Xeon CPU's) as these machines are able to run Java version 1.6. Only Java 1.5 appears affected.

At this point, no work around is available to make the desktop icon work, but you may continue to launch ShelfServer using the "Run ShelfServer" link from the site, by double-clicking a previously downloaded shelfserver.jnlp file (which is what the Run ShelfServer link links to), or by using the ZIP'd version of ShelfServer from www.iphonebookshelf.com/webstart/ShelfServer.zip

This article will be updated should a work around or fix from Apple become available.

"Device not authorized" opening MobiPocket file (no replies)

While BookShelf supports many MobiPocket format files, one class of files it cannot access are any which are encrypted using Digitally Restricted Media (DRM). Many book publishers require that any files purchased from them are encrypted in order to assert control over what you can do with your books.

Unfortunately BookShelf cannot currently support these restricted files due to legal issues in US Law. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) makes it a criminal offense to circumvent any DRM scheme. Even though you own the books you've purchased, it's against the law for you to decrypt them in any way other than what the publisher has allowed or to read them on any device which isn't specifically authorized by the publisher. While efforts have been made to secure a license from MobiPocket to implement their DRM, no response has been received to date.

At the present time, it seems unlikely that BookShelf will be able to support any DRM encumbered files in the foreseeable future. If you have such files that you wish to read, it might be worth contacting the publisher to request the file be made available in a more compatible form.

WebStart of ShelfServer fails (on Mac OS X) (2 replies)

Occasionally the WebStart launch of ShelfServer will fail, complaining about being unable to access a URL that looks something like file://localhost/Users/yourname/Library/Caches/Java/cache/javaws/http/Dwww.iphonebookshelf.com/P80/.... Retrying the WebStart usually doesn't work at this point.

I'm still not sure of the cause of this problem, but the fix is fairly easy and has worked for everyone who's tried.

1. If you have an icon on your desktop for "iPhone BookShelf", drag it to the trash.
2. Open Finder, and starting from your Home folder, navigate down to Library and then Caches.
3. At that level, you'll see several folders including one named "Java". You can either rename the Java folder (to something like "Java-backup"), or just simply drag the Java folder to the Trash. Everything in that folder will be automatically re-downloded whenever it's needed.
4. Finally WebStart ShelfServer again. WebStart should take a minute or two to download the app, and it should launch as soon as the download completes.

If for some reason the above doesn't work, the other option is to download the ZIP'd version of ShelfServer instead. You can get the latest version from http://www.iphonebookshelf.com/webstart/ShelfServer.zip. There are several drawbacks to this approach. First, this version doesn't self-update like the WebStart version does. It lacks the nice icon and operating system integration that Apple's Java WebStart process creates.

To use the ZIP'd version, download and unzip the file, and double-click the ShelfServerGui.jar file inside.

Trouble following hyperlinks (no replies)

Starting with version 1.2, BookShelf supports hyperlinks in HTML-like file formats including Plucker, Mobi, plain-HTML, CHM, etc. There are currently a few known wrinkles with the link support that I aim to improve in the future, but with just a little bit of practice, most people can use hyperlinks reliably.

The biggest issue is that links in BookShelf don't react instantly. Given that most users will probably scroll more than follow links, I felt it was important to make sure the existing tap-to-scroll mechanism stayed intact when link support was added. This compromise shows in the timing required to trigger links.

In order to trigger a link in a document, you need to tap & hold the link for just longer than the time it takes to highlight under your finger. If a pop-up "balloon" showing the link destination appears, you held too long. If nothing happens or the toolbars toggle when you release, you didn't hold long enough. The background of the link will turn dark if you hold for about 1/4 of a second, and that's when you want to let go.

I *think* most people will get the knack of it pretty quickly. I will likely tweak the timing a bit in a future release.

Ideally, yes.

While it's possible to configure BookShelf to connect back to your desktop over EDGE or 3G, this is considered an advanced topic and not supported. It does work, but it requires you to reconfigure your router/firewall and could leave you open to outside attackers or knock you off the Internet completely if done incorrectly.

There's information on how to configure ShelfServer on the Advanced page, but please understand: If it breaks, you get to keep the pieces. There are just too many variations of router/firewall and ISP setups for me to have any prayer of supporting them all.

Does BookShelf support PDB or PRC files? (no replies)

Yes and No...

Not all PDB files are created equal. PalmOS used the PDB or PRC file extension to hold every possible type of data that could be put onto a Palm device. Everything from calendars, address books, shopping lists, and even in some cases, ebooks.

BookShelf supports several types of PDB files (see the question on supported formats). Most notably, it does not support iSilo or eReader files at this time.
